Solving the Parking Dilemma, Part 2…..

curb serviceWell, first thing is that we’re going to have to hire someone who actually looks like this, but until then, we’re trying a new idea to help you beat the notorious parking situation in Snider Plaza. Program this number into your speed dial: 214.696.AFAR (2327). If you find yourself making yet another loop around the Snider Plaza fountain, with no parking space in sight, give us a call. If we’ve got space in our parking in back of the store, we’ll guide you in there. Or, tell us what you need, give us your payment info, and we’ll run it out to your vechicle as you sashay wildly around the Plaza yet another time.

We aim to please and get our goodies into your hot little hands!

Life and Death in Florence’s Central Market

Visit Us This Week to See What We Found!

Siena marketFlorence brims with the best and worst of mankind. Good and evil have duked it out here for centuries and the battle continues apace. At Florence’s Mercato Centrale, the nexus of beauty and brutality boggles the eye and fills the brain. Fascinated by lovely glistening orbs of organs, we pull away and consider their function. Looking at a cow’s heart big as two fists set at a jaunty angle with all the detail of a biology textbook, lovely waves of tripe, egg-shaped testes laced with pointillistic pink veins, we’re forced to think of our own life and death, and the mystery of what it is that keeps us ticking.

Did we bring any of these items back with us? No we did not! But we did glean a limited selection of goodies from markets in Siena, Florence, and Rome, and will bring them back with us when we return Tuesday, not to mention a beautiful new shipment of Deruta Ceramics arriving in May. We’ve got Murano glass earrings, colorful Tuscan tablecloths, Pashimas for topping shoulders or tables, San Marzano tomato seeds….Limited selection, but loads of fun! Come by to see what we’ve got!

In our next newsletter, read on to learn about our lunch last week with our favorite Deruta ceramicist, Luca Pimpinelli, and his surprise guest, writer/director and seven-time Emmy winner Vincenzo Labella. Give him a Google and then we’ll tell you what he says how Luca’s ceramics capture the sunlight and brighten the world.

dscf2269.JPGEver Tried It?

We’re writing live from Italy, as we finish up our April °Food and Wine in Tuscany° tour. It’s a sunny day in Roma, and every visit tells a story. Two views of travel: One that if you’re not working your way down the list of “1000 Places to See Before You Die”, you’ve lost out, and the other that each time we see a beloved site we’re a little changed, and see something new.

Impressions? The generosity of strangers, the disappointment of lost anticipation, the blue brilliance of the shiny Italian sky, layers of lives lived in hamlets reaching back centuries, the satisfaction of landing in a perfect restaurant under the Ponte Vecchio, and the peace in finding home away from home.

Ingredients of the season? We loved:

  • Pure green asparagus spears curled around each other in concentric circles
  • Glorious tiny purple artichoke globes plucked fresh from a nest of leaves
  • Rabbits looking a little too real: skinned and lying as if in mid-leap
  • Local pecorino, sheep’s cheese with all the elegance of parmesan, perfection in itself, and available in all sorts of flavors, flavored with ash, basil, wine, orbitter walnuts.
  • Ribbons of fresh prosciutto sliced impossibly thin – yum!
  • Pizza in all shapes and forms – but be aware that Pizza Bianca has no relationship with formaggio!
  • Tiny little green peas nestled cozily in rounds of pasta
  • Silken gelato at every turn – look for “artigianale”/artisinal and avoid plastic colors to get the best.
  • And of course wine: the Sangiovese grape that flavors Chianti, Vino Nobile de Montipulciano, and Brunello, all perfect complements to the local fare

An Outsider Looks In On Us!

We love the New York Times on Travel; so well written and chockful of precious little details. So fun to pick up a recent read and find ourselves mirror- imaged there. This on Dallas and another on Fort Worth fairly accurately “gets” the differences between the two and actually kindly comments on Dallas’ evolution over the past decade. Click it up and tell us what you think; send us an email at sales@flavorsfromafar.com.

This week: Peach Habanero Ambrosia Chevre Cups!peach habaneroIt’s time for the fresh taste of Spring (but with a little bite!). Try Peach Habanero Ambrosia ($8.49) over Tonia Ashworth’s fresh chevre ($7.49) inside one of our Pastry Party Cups ($4.99/box of 20). A light and sparkly Prosecco or Rose would be just swell as a compelement. Picture it now: you, friends, nibbles, and a spring breeze…..
