Riding to the Light

 

If life is like a swing, a pendulum,

            Moving back and forth, marking Time

Then December’s darkest night comes when we ride it to the top,

            Swinging up as far as we can go, then

            Hanging there for one split second, when

            Mass is all Potential, before

            Gravity pulls us back.

In that moment, we lean forward, as

            Winter’s first riff of cold clenches our neck.

We arc our back, and look deep into the dark, and

            See

Auld Recipe Boxes and “Neiman’s” $250 Cookie

Recipe Boxes  Cookbooks and recipes:  every one tells a story.  Wandering through the memory lanes that are my mother’s and grandmother’s recipe boxes and searching for holiday cheer, I thumbed through them, thinking how times have changed.  Articles clipped from the morning news, recipes painstakingly typed, or more often, written in actual legible penmanship, filled the boxes to overflowing.   

I found what I was looking for:  something I’d never actually tasted, but so emblematic of times past.  The NEIMAN’S $250 Cookie! the title announced, the underline key on the typewriter perforating the page.  Couldn’t wait to try it.  (more…)
