Snail Season in Tuscany

We love a visit to Da Mario restaurant perched in the tiny medieval center of Buonconvento. It’s near Altesino winery, home of wonderful Brunello Montosoli, where we tried the 2006. Just fabulous.

But back to the snails. When you order them at Da Mario, you get a bowl resting in a rustic, almost meaty red sauce. None of that butter garlic glop that we normally associate with snails. This bowl (don’t look too close as you eat the little critters), a glass of wine, a tasty fresh green salad, and you’re ready to walk those cobblestoned, hilly streets!
